A Trans Siberian railway break can be the ultimate adventure - and with this three-part series of articles you can learn something about what you might expect on such a holiday.

While you can travel either way along the route, a number of tours begin in Beijing and end in Moscow. Usually, you'll get a few days to explore the Chinese capital and its plethora of attractions.

Highly recommended are the Great Wall, the Imperial Palace, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square, Beijing Zoo, the Temple of Heaven and the Ming tombs, among other must-sees. Sadly, it's unlikely you'll be able to see everything that you'll want to see over the course of a few days, but you should be able to see the main sights.

Once on the train out of Beijing, you will head to Erlian, where you will be required to change trains due to the different gauges used in the Chinese and Russian railways. It might take a while to get through the passport control procedures at the border, but generally you will find that you can pass through relatively quickly.

This new train will be your mode of transport for much of the rest of your Trans Siberian tour and should offer all of the basic amenities you need. Food is usually served via a restaurant car, or you can make your own arrangements and purchase meals at station stops.
